Online Companies and Offline Marketing

Many web-based businesses make the mistake of thinking that their marketing strategies should only involve the internet. Such an approach severely limits the range of your advertising. Many people, if not most, still use the web only for email, for viewing specific sites and for the occasional keyword search. Traditional print and broadcast advertising is far more apt to reach them in their day-to-day life. It is important, then, to incorporate all kinds of advertising into your marketing strategy, not just online advertising.

Newspapers reach more people than perhaps any other medium, so newspaper ads are a great place to start advertising offline. For maximum effectiveness, try running your ad in the same spot in the paper for an extended period of time. People who see the ad day after day will consider you an established, reliable business, even if they have no real experience with your company. Classified ads are an especially cheap newspaper advertising option.

Radio advertising works well, too. Nearly everyone listens to the radio in the car, and many people keep it on all day long in the office. To reach a broad swath of the population, consider running ads on the local rock station, country station and top-40 station.

Cable television advertising is tremendously effective and buying time from your local provider is quite affordable. In many cases the rates are comparable to print and radio advertising, but because you have video and audio at your disposal, television advertising is potentially much more powerful. Advertise on a network affiliate to reach the maximum number of people, or advertise directly to your niche by running ads on a specialty channel. These days there's a channel for everything, from gardening to golf to video games to racecar driving, and ad space on the "upper" channels is especially cheap.

Give out free promotional products to establish your name and to gain customer appreciation. Mouse pads are a sensible choice for online businesses, but originality counts, too. Stress-relieving devices are always popular, especially with people who spend a lot of time on the computer. There's nothing wrong, however, with utilizing tried-and-true promotional items like pens, magnets and coffee mugs. They're common because they work.

Finally, good ole' flyers are perhaps the cheapest advertising venue around, unless you count word of mouth. You can print off as many flyers as you like for only the price of ink and paper. Go to a crowded parking lot and stick them on windshields. Tape them to lampposts and telephone poles. Put them in the window at local computer stores, coffee shops and any other stores that'll permit you to do so.
